These pictures have been liberated from the long-sealed archives of the Wolfson College Boat Club. Do you have any information on the 1999 Portugal trip? Can you identify anyone in these pictures? Do you know the dates of the trip, or a few funny stories from it? Please e-mail us or contribute your story.
In the summer of 1999, Wolfson College Boat Club went on an all-expense paid trip to Oporto and the Duoro River Valley in Portugal to race our Cambridge sister college, Darwin. Started the previous year as a tourist attraction development exercise, and originally pitched as an “Oxford versus Cambridge” race, it was a fantastic time for the club. The women’s VIII won their races each year. (We’re still scouring the record for the men’s VIII’s results.)
The choirs of both colleges also attended and performed. Meghan Backhouse coxed the men, and Keith Spencer coxed the women. Other boat club members in attendance included Richard Holland, Nanda Pirie, Michelle Ciarlo-Hayes, Wendy Capes, Emma Jaikaran, and Sanna Fowler. We are still working out further details and stories, and will post them here when we have them!
