Wolfson College Boat Club, Oxford

Summer Eights 1996

Wolfson did exceptionally well in this year’s Summer Eights coming 2nd overall behind St. Catz with 16 bumps for and 0 against (the only college with a clean sheet!). All agreed that a well-organized club had been the key to this year’s success; hopefully laying the foundations for an equally successful 1997. Congratulations and thanks to the outgoing committee members for their hard work and dedication.

Crews

Six crews were entered and all bumped up at least one place. Women’s 1st and 2nd bumped up a division as did Men’s 1st. Both the women’s boats were unlucky not to gain blades and looked very impressive out on the river.

Men’s First Boat

Men’s 1st bumped into the II division on the first day and then spent the next three days chasing LMH in a thrilling battle of nerves.

Women’s First Boat

wfirst8_96

Women’s 1st made it into the I division on the first day where they looked very much at home bumping Univ. and Jesus on the second and last days and moving up four places.

Men’s Third Boat

Men’s 3rd were amongst the second highest risers (!) bumping up 5 places. Good luck saved them from a Lincoln III School’s Eight on the first day and allowed them to catch an unfortunate St. Benet’s with a broken rudder on the last.

Men’s Fourth Boat

The men’s 4th was really a St. Cross Eight. They crabbed every day but one, including the rowing on, despite Rupert Dicey-Dare’s coaching. They nevertheless managed to bump up one place and avoided disaster rowing over with only six and a half oars in action on one day. Charles Ehrlich put his oar where his mouth is and showed us all how it should be done but as he is trying to keep a low profile please don’t mention this.
