Despite the withdrawal of the first eight, the second eight thrust themselves into the murky waters of the Tideway for the gruelling 4 and a quarter mile race from Mortlake to Putney. They had an excellent row, faster than last year’s novice first eight and faster than Linacre women and faster than the men’s second eight (see below). Their lovely red lycra was shown off to its best advantage by eight different lurid long-sleeved T-shirts. Everyone will be buying the black and white photos of the event. The next day when rowing the boat back from City, Andrea was convinced that she was being slowly submerged. On lifting the boat out of the water, it became clear that there was indeed a hole under the three seat. Poor old Sir Raymond was put on the racks to await the loving attention of Jim.
